Goodbye, all of Evangelion

Although the Rebuild of Evangelion film series seemingly reached its conclusion in 2021 with its final chapter, the recent announcement of a new animated project during the franchise’s 30th-anniversary celebration has given fans plenty to look forward to. Arriving one year after its Operation Yashima scene kit, Kaiyodo’s 2026 ARTPLA release once again features an original sculpt by Shinobu Matsumura. This time, the spotlight falls on Evangelion Unit-13 during the climactic battle in Antarctica from Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. After absorbing the Angel-infused Asuka and reawakening to trigger another Impact, The Last Executor towers over the battlefield with a Spear of Longinus in each hand!

The kit’s biggest highlights are its two Spears of Longinus, both injection-molded in crystal-clear red plastic. Their vivid translucent finish pairs beautifully with the three-dimensional blades, which twist inward along a 90-degree spiral and showcase Kaiyodo’s remarkably precise tooling.

Each completed spear measures nearly 33 centimeters long. Placed alongside the Real Grade Evangelion Unit-01, its sheer size makes an immediate visual impact.

Displayed with the temporarily assembled, precariously balanced dark-purple body, the despair-inducing Spears of Longinus point toward heaven and earth. Together, they recreate Unit-13’s apocalyptic, god-slaying presence.

During the design stage, Asuka’s entry plug was originally held in Unit-13’s right hand. Shinobu Matsumura later repositioned it between the Eva’s teeth, moments away from being bitten in half. Just looking at it is enough to bring the gentle guitar melody of Kyou no Hi wa Sayounara flooding back—and the emotional damage along with it.

The one that really gets the worst of it, however, is the severed head of Evangelion Production Model-New 02 α, which lies crushed beneath Unit-13’s foot and doubles as the display base.

In the movie, Asuka tears off her left eyepatch, activates Backdoor Code 999, and injects Angel Blood into Evangelion Production Model-New 02 α to break through the A.T. Field. Unfortunately, Unit-13 counters first and sends her Eva’s head flying across the battlefield. Seriously, Shinji—rude much?

Its glistening, gore-slick maw hangs wide open, with the dark-red tongue still lolling outside. It is one gruesome way to go.

Evangelion Production Model-New 02 α was initially painted in a reddish-purple base color, with flesh tones added to the highlights for contrast. Layers of transparent red, orange, and purple gradually build the unsettling impression of mangled flesh that still holds a trace of warmth.

The overlapping rows of biological armor across the back almost resemble the shell of some marine arthropod.

On the two larger bone plates near the head, the sculpted surface texture was used to create warm, vein-like color gradients.

With the base complete, it is time to turn to the main body—and the detail here is no less impressive. Unit-13’s internal musculature features exceptionally fine sculpting, though much of that fantastic physique will disappear once the outer armor goes on.

Still, it has to get dressed eventually. The painted armor parts are glued into place one by one in the proper sequence.

Sacrifice the Angel, initiate deification, and complete the Human Instrumentality Project.

Fourth Impact will purify every soul. The Last Executor descends!

Evangelion Unit-13 closely resembles Unit-01 but features a tandem cockpit system with two entry plugs. Its head normally bears a pair of narrow, golden compound eyes.

The opposite side recreates the horrific moment when its eyes turn red and bulge outward as Unit-13 prepares to enter an apparently deified state.

The bright-green markings across the upper body were painted with fluorescent colors, producing an intense glow under ultraviolet light.

In its standard configuration, the arms feature black, sleeve-like rubber coverings. Shinobu Matsumura’s sculpt seamlessly blends the inorganic armor with flowing organic forms, while a gloss finish gives these sections their smooth appearance.

A second pair of arms lies concealed beneath the chest armor. Once released and extended, they transform Unit-13 into its menacing four-armed configuration.

The black core in its chest retains the puncture marks left in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, when Kaworu Nagisa used the Spears of Longinus in an attempt to stop Fourth Impact. Farther down, the abdominal armor hides most of the muscular structure underneath, but the partially exposed anatomy only strengthens the design’s identity as an artificial humanoid weapon.

The legs demonstrate the paint treatment used throughout this build. A reddish-purple base establishes the main tone, while deep purple shading along the edges creates layered color that seems to glow red from within.

That treatment continues down to the lower legs. Unit-13’s step may look almost weightless, but its foot is bearing down hard on the severed head of Evangelion Production Model-New 02 α. This exact image never appears in the movie. As Shinobu Matsumura explained, his goal was not simply to capture a single frame, but to imagine what might have happened before and after several different scenes, then reconstruct those ideas into a new composition.

Built to pull the trigger on the final ritual of the Human Instrumentality Project, everything has led to this moment—the act of godslaying that Father desired.
