The latest Gunpla product from Mobile Suit Gundam, "BEST MECHA COLLECTION 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam (REVIVAL Ver.)", released by BANDAI SPIRITS Co., Ltd.'s HOBBY Division in Japan, is set to officially launch on October 12, 2024. Ahead of its release, the official channels have updated new images including the product box art, physical samples, and parts frame design.
This product originates from the very first Gunpla item, "1/144 Gundam," released in July 1980. Back then, the old kit was not as convenient to build as modern products. Without color separation for parts or snap-fit designs, every single part had to be glued together. The plastic parts also came in only a single color, requiring the characteristic red, blue, and yellow Gundam colors to be hand-painted. Furthermore, the articulation design only allowed for stiff movements of the neck and limbs.
"BEST MECHA COLLECTION 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam (REVIVAL Ver.)" utilizes modern 2024 color separation and part division techniques to recreate the original "1/144 Gundam" Gunpla product released in 1980. Even the packaging box art has been thoroughly replicated. The overall design retains the unique, simple, and animation-like aesthetic of the old kit, while redesigning the overall part separation and assembly structure. This allows the kit to feature a rich array of molded colors including white, yellow, red, blue, and dark gray. However, the articulation design has not been overly modified, as doing so would diminish the original charm.
