More than a decade after its release, "Grand Theft Auto V" continues to hold a strong position among Steam's top ten most-played games, with a thriving community of players engaging in "GTA RP" within "Grand Theft Auto Online." In a surprising turn, players have leveraged the online mode to create a documentary film infused with "Shakespearean tragedy elements," a work now slated for North American theatrical release and global streaming.

Reportedly, the documentary, titled "Grand Theft Hamlet," was produced by independent studio Altitude Media Group using "Grand Theft Auto Online." The film chronicles the journey of two unemployed theater actors, Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen, as they attempt to stage William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" entirely within the chaotic world of the video game.
The project initially began as a casual creative endeavor by Altitude Media Group during the 2021 COVID-19 lockdown, a way to pass the time. However, it unexpectedly caught the attention of art film distributor Mubi. The documentary subsequently premiered at the 2024 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in the United States, where it earned the Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature.

"Grand Theft Hamlet" is also scheduled to have its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. Following its festival run, the film is set for a theatrical release in North America, with Mubi planning to release it in US theaters on January 17, 2025, and globally on its streaming service on February 21, 2025.
