James Gunn Emphasizes Not All DCU Projects Are Guaranteed: "No Rushing Production! Everything Depends On..."

With the upcoming premiere of the DCU animated series "Creature Commandos" and director James Gunn's recent reveal of new footage for 2025's "Superman," fan anticipation for the DC cinematic universe has certainly surged. However, Gunn has cautioned that not every announced DCU project is guaranteed to move forward.

This clarification came after Gunn responded on Threads to a headline from IGN that stated, "James Gunn Guarantees All DCU Projects Will Still Happen Even If There's No Progress." Gunn stated, "I want to clarify what I said. While all of these initially announced projects are in development, it doesn't mean they are all guaranteed to happen. It all depends on how the scripts develop. We won't rush into production just because a project was announced if the script isn't fully developed."

The original IGN report had quoted Gunn's October 14, 2024, Threads comments responding to a fan about the DCU's status. It interpreted his remarks—that "some scripts are still in development, and some are looking for suitable writers," and "when the scripts are complete, they will be ready for filming and enter the production phase"—as meaning "projects will continue even if there's no progress." This interpretation prompted Gunn's need for clarification.

Currently, the DCU projects with confirmed release dates include:

"Creature Commandos" (animated series, December 5, 2024)
"Superman" (film, July 11, 2025)
"Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" (June 26, 2026)

As for other projects like "The Authority," "The Brave and the Bold," and "Swamp Thing," along with two previously mentioned unnamed films potentially featuring Teen Titans and Bane and Deathstroke, they are still awaiting suitable directors and release date confirmations.
