Xbox's "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" Lands 86 on Metacritic: Captures Franchise Essence, But Performance and Pacing Draw Mixed Reactions

Ahead of its December 9, 2024, release, Xbox's highly anticipated action-adventure title, "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle," has garnered impressive scores from various gaming outlets, positioning it as one of the console's biggest releases this year.

As of December 6, 2024, 89 media outlets have reviewed "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle," resulting in a strong average score of 86 on the aggregate review site Metacritic. Several publications, including VGC, Eurogamer, and GamesRadar+, awarded the game a perfect 10/10. GameSpot and IGN both gave it a 9/10, while Dexerto rated it 8/10. The lowest score came from Pure Xbox, which gave it a 6/10.

Dexerto (Xbox Series X) – 8/10

Dexerto noted that despite some minor performance issues, "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" successfully captured the essence of the titular character, delivering an outstanding experience in terms of story, characters, and visuals. The reviewer recommended the game as a must-play for fans of action-adventure titles and the "Indiana Jones" franchise.

GameSpot (PC) – 9/10

GameSpot praised MachineGames for crafting a character-driven action-adventure game that combined improvised stealth and combat, embodying the spirit and charm of "Indiana Jones" with fast-paced, free-flowing gameplay. While perhaps not as polished as the studio's "Wolfenstein" series, "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" still offered a highly enjoyable experience.

IGN (PC) – 9/10

IGN described the game as a captivating and irresistible treasure-hunting adventure that surpassed previous "Indiana Jones" stories, calling it the most exciting "Indiana Jones" experience of the century. The reviewer urged players to install the game on their hard drives and fully immerse themselves in the experience.

PC Gamer (PC) – 8.6/10

PC Gamer likened the game to a blend of an immersive sim and "Uncharted." The reviewer suggested that while "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" might fall slightly short in some aspects, it stood as a top-tier game alongside titles like the "Batman: Arkham" series and "GoldenEye."

TheGamer (PC) – 7/10

TheGamer stated that players focusing solely on the main story would find plenty of enjoyment, as "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" offered an interesting narrative with good mission variety that authentically recreated the classic "Indiana Jones" style. The reviewer noted that sticking to the main quests provided a decent gaming experience, but felt that the rest of the game was rather uninspired.

Pure Xbox (Xbox Series X) – 6/10

Pure Xbox expressed disappointment despite high expectations for MachineGames' "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle." The reviewer acknowledged that the experience wasn't bad and successfully presented the "Indiana Jones" world, but criticized the chaotic pacing and gameplay design, which didn't align with the adventurous atmosphere. The open-ended stealth levels, in particular, felt poorly integrated, leading to a contradictory and disjointed overall feeling. The reviewer concluded that while they appreciate diverse gameplay elements and innovative design, the most engaging parts of "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" were fleeting, which was regrettable given the development team's efforts to adapt such a classic IP.
