Riot Games Defends "Arcane" Investment: Co-Founder Addresses Profit Concerns, Says "It's a Success If Players Like It"

As ">previously reported, the success of the animated series "Arcane," based on "League of Legends," did not lead to a significant influx of new players for the game. Furthermore, Riot Games reportedly fell short of its expected profit targets, generating only half of the series' estimated $250 million production cost, thus failing to meet its ideal revenue goals. However, for Riot, this outcome is apparently not considered a "financial failure," and the company has even refuted external media conclusions.

Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill took to ">Reddit to address a recent Bloomberg report concerning "League of Legends." He stated that those who view everything through the lens of short-term profits, skepticism, or cynicism would not understand how Riot Games operates.

Merrill continued, "People used to say high-quality free-to-play games couldn't survive in the market, that esports wouldn't succeed, they thought our music ventures were crazy, and now they claim 'Arcane' isn't worth it or underperformed... These people always find reasons to criticize."

"These individuals believe we made 'Arcane' to sell skins, but the truth is the opposite: we sell skins to fund projects like 'Arcane'," Merrill explained. "Riot Games is a mission-driven company. Every member here strives to enhance the player experience, which is why we consistently achieve success across multiple games, including esports, music, and even animation."

"So, do we need to achieve perfection in everything? Of course not. Our focus isn't on short-term profits, but on consistently delivering long-term entertainment value to players, and we do this every single time, without interruption."

"Simply put," Merrill concluded, "if players enjoy 'Arcane,' then for us, it is a successful project."
