Masahiro Nakai, former leader of the iconic Japanese idol group SMAP, recently faced a sexual misconduct scandal. As a result, footage from his New Year's special program was entirely removed, numerous variety shows he hosted were successively halted or suspended, even his radio program was put on hold, and his endorsement deals were pulled. This effectively blacklisted him and led to a potential "early retirement" crisis.
Amid widespread media reports alleging sexual assault of a Fuji TV female employee and continuous revelations of further details, Nakai today (January 9) finally issued a formal apology on his official website. He also emphasized that some reports contained inaccuracies, sparking intense discussion among Japanese netizens.

▼ Nakai's statement also became a trending topic on X in Japan.

The announcement on Masahiro Nakai's official website reads as follows:
Regarding the recent reports concerning a dispute involving a woman, I, Masahiro Nakai, am deeply sorry and extend my sincere apologies to everyone who has been troubled by this. My full statement is as follows.
I deeply regret the trouble this incident has caused the public. While some parts of the reports are not entirely accurate, I offer my profound apologies to the other party involved and all related individuals, and I feel immense unease and self-reproach.
Due to a confidentiality obligation related to the settlement discussions with the other party, I was unable to issue a statement earlier. However, as this incident has significantly impacted my professional activities, I wish to provide an explanation within the bounds of that confidentiality.
First, it is true that a dispute occurred. Through mediation by both parties' representatives, a settlement has now been reached and the matter has been properly resolved. Throughout the resolution process, I sincerely addressed the other party's proposals and cooperated actively.
I would like to clarify that allegations of violence, such as physical assault, mentioned in some reports, are entirely untrue. Furthermore, this incident was solely an issue between the two parties involved, with no third-party participation.
Now that a settlement has been reached, my future entertainment activities will not be affected, and I will continue to work diligently.

Regarding recent media reports suggesting more people are involved, Nakai clarified that no one else besides the direct parties was involved in this dispute. He stated, "This dispute was caused by me. Although the matter involves another party, I ask everyone not to conduct speculative investigations, defamation, or slander regarding this case." He concluded by once again apologizing to the public.
However, this incident has severely damaged Masahiro Nakai's public image. Many Japanese netizens find it difficult to accept his stance of continuing his entertainment career despite the unresolved nature of the incident's details. How the entertainment industry and the Japanese public will react to Nakai's apology, and whether he can maintain his media presence, remains a more realistic and evolving situation.
