Masahiro Nakai, former leader of the iconic Japanese idol group SMAP, has recently been embroiled in a sexual misconduct scandal. This has led to the successive suspension and cancellation of numerous variety shows and radio programs he hosted. The scandal has also implicated Fuji Television, which is alleged to have privately arranged "sexual tributes" involving female announcers. Consequently, nearly fifty companies have decided to pull their advertisements from Fuji TV.
On January 23, Nakai announced his official retirement from the entertainment industry, effective immediately, via his paid fan club website. The news quickly became a trending topic online.

Nakai wrote on his fan club website: "I, Masahiro Nakai, officially conclude my entertainment activities today. Furthermore, my company, Nonbiri Nakai Co., Ltd., will be formally dissolved upon completion of the remaining procedures and operations."
He further explained: "This announcement is being made today after all discussions regarding program terminations, resignations, partnership suspensions, and contract cancellations with the television stations, radio stations, and sponsors I have worked with have concluded. I do not believe this fully absolves me of all responsibility. Moving forward, I will continue to address various issues with sincerity and fulfill my due responsibilities. All responsibility for this lies solely with me. I am deeply sorry for the trouble and losses caused to numerous individuals involved."
In his statement, he reiterated his apology to those involved: "At the same time, I wish to sincerely apologize once again to the individuals directly affected. To all parties involved, I am deeply sorry, and I extend my most heartfelt apologies once more. I am truly, truly sorry."
Addressing his fans, he wrote: "To all my fans who have always supported me, whether we've met, haven't met, or were meant to meet, I am truly, truly sorry to say goodbye in this manner." He concluded with, "Goodbye..."

However, many netizens still believe that Nakai has not fully clarified the events that transpired, and find his previous mindset of continuing to work in the entertainment industry difficult to comprehend. Even with Nakai's retirement announcement, the ripple effect on Japanese television stations continues to unfold. More and more companies are withdrawing their advertisements, pushing operations into a crisis state. It remains to be seen if Japanese television stations will face even greater impact.
