Released in Japan on June 11, 2021, the animated film "Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway" raked in an impressive 2.23 billion Japanese Yen at the box office, making it the third highest-grossing Gundam film in franchise history.
However, "Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway" is just the first installment of a planned trilogy, and four years after its debut, news on the sequels has been radio silent—until now! Yesterday (January 24), during Shochiku's 130th-anniversary slate announcement for 2025-26, the "Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway" sequel was finally mentioned, sending a ripple of excitement through the fandom.
The event featured appearances by Nanoka Hara and Maika Pyu, stars of the animated film "Alice in Wonderland -Dive in Wonderland-." Also present were director Yoji Yamada, Chieko Baisho, and Takuya Kimura, who are involved in "TOKYO TAXI," a Shochiku 130th-anniversary commemorative film set to premiere this November.

Speaking of Shochiku's animated offerings, January saw the release of "Project SEKAI: The Broken World and the Unsingable Hatsune Miku" and the theatrical pre-release of "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX-Beginning-." Additionally, "Nintama Rantaro the Movie: The Strongest Master of the Dokutake Ninja Corps," which premiered late last year, has already surpassed 1.5 billion Japanese Yen at the box office, highlighting the continued strong performance of Shochiku's animated productions.
During the 2025-26 slate presentation, officials confirmed that the "Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway" sequel is "actively in production." They acknowledged that many fans have been waiting patiently and asked for just a little more time.
While an exact release date remains elusive, it certainly feels like we might finally see the next chapter of the "unfilial son" trilogy in 2025 or 2026. Fans, there's still hope!
