The Legendary Jubei Yagyu Returns! Capcom's "Onimusha 2 HD Remaster" Slated for 2025 Release

Capcom’s action game "Onimusha," set in Japan's Sengoku period, was a massive hit when its first installment launched on PlayStation 2 in 2001. It was a pioneer in using real-life actors for character models, with Takeshi Kaneshiro lending his likeness and voice to the unforgettable protagonist, Samanosuke Akechi.

Today (Feb 5), during the official YouTube "Capcom Spotlight + Monster Hunter Wilds Showcase Feb 2025" event, it was revealed that "Onimusha 2 HD Remaster" is slated for a 2025 release on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Steam.

"Onimusha 2," released in 2002 as the second game in the series, took a groundbreaking approach by featuring the late 70s and 80s superstar Yusaku Matsuda as the model for its protagonist, Jubei Yagyu.

Following the first game, Samanosuke Akechi successfully used the Oni power to defeat the Genma King, but the seeds of the Genma scourge were not fully extinguished. Oda Nobunaga, supported by the surviving Genma clan, inherited the title of Genma King. Due to a feud with the Yagyu clan, who had close ties to the Oni, Nobunaga ordered the massacre of Yagyu Village under the guise of rebellion. When protagonist Jubei Yagyu returned to his hometown and witnessed the hellish devastation, he vowed to avenge his clan, embarking on his perilous journey.

This official announcement brings a full graphical upgrade to the 23-year-old "Onimusha 2," delivering modern gameplay quality and effects. Of course, the core game retains its original charm, allowing veteran players to relive the nostalgia and new players to experience this classic for the first time.

"Onimusha 2 HD Remaster" is confirmed for a 2025 multi-platform release, though specific dates are yet to be revealed. And if that's not enough, there's also the brand-new "Onimusha: Way of the Sword" slated for 2026. Fans will have to wait for more official updates to get the full picture of this upcoming title.
