STARTO ENTERTAINMENT's idol group KAT-TUN just dropped a bombshell via their official website: they're officially disbanding on March 31, 2025. The news sent shockwaves, especially since it comes right before their 25th anniversary. Ending such a storied 25-year run just shy of the milestone has left fans heartbroken, with many expressing their sorrow across social media.
So, what's next for the remaining three members—Kazuya Kamenashi (38), Tatsuya Ueda (41), and Yuichi Nakamaru (41)? According to STARTO ENTERTAINMENT's disbandment announcement, Kamenashi, whose contract is expiring, will depart SMILE-UP. (formerly Johnny & Associates). Ueda and Nakamaru, however, will renew their contracts, shedding the "KAT-TUN" moniker as they each forge their own paths.
From Peak Debut to Constant Turmoil: The Illustrious Journey of KAT-TUN
Even before their official debut, KAT-TUN had already amassed massive popularity thanks to their dazzling performances and idol charm. But the truth is, their journey hasn't been smooth sailing since their formation in 2001.
Originally a six-member group, including Jin Akanishi (40), Koki Tanaka (39), and Junnosuke Taguchi (39), the lineup began to change. Jin Akanishi left the group on August 31, 2010, followed by Koki Tanaka and Junnosuke Taguchi in 2013 and 2016, respectively, both departing the agency for their own reasons. This led KAT-TUN into a "recharge period," suspending all group activities until their highly anticipated return in 2018.
In recent years, KAT-TUN has remained active, making their first appearance on "NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen" in 2021 and embarking on their "KAT-TUN LIVE TOUR 2023 Fantasia" national tour in 2023. However, this disbandment announcement officially brings their 25-year journey to a bittersweet and regrettable close.
