Magic: The Gathering Teams Up with Final Fantasy: Cloud, Tidus, Y'shtola, and More Join the Fray

The renowned card game "Magic: The Gathering" (MTG), which has collaborated with numerous IPs in recent years—including Marvel Comics, "Assassin's Creed", "The Lord of the Rings", and "Fallout"—is now setting its sights on Square Enix's "Final Fantasy" series for its next major crossover.

Given the breadth of the series, this collaboration won't be confined to a single title! Reports indicate that this "Magic: The Gathering" crossover will feature four Commander decks, drawing from the classic installments: "Final Fantasy VI", "Final Fantasy VII", "Final Fantasy X", and "Final Fantasy XIV". Characters like Terra Branford, Cloud Strife, Tidus, and Y'shtola Rhul will serve as commanders, leading MTG players into the fantastical world of "Final Fantasy".

Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt revealed that the design philosophy behind these crossover decks is to faithfully represent the worldviews and iconic scenes of each game. Each 100-card deck will feature reinterpretations of classic "Magic: The Gathering" cards alongside newly designed, exclusive cards crafted to capture the unique essence of "Final Fantasy".

Discussing the criteria for deck selection, Holt stated that "Final Fantasy VII" and "Final Fantasy XIV" were undisputed choices due to their long-standing popularity within the player community. As for "Final Fantasy VI" and "Final Fantasy X", he noted that numerous passionate fans of these two titles within the development team poured their hearts and souls into their design.

These four Commander decks are slated for official release on June 13 this year. For both "Final Fantasy" enthusiasts and "Magic: The Gathering" players, this is undoubtedly a crossover event not to be missed. Beyond these Commander decks, Wizards of the Coast also plans to roll out additional "Final Fantasy"-themed products, encompassing various game titles and iconic characters. Many fans are eagerly awaiting further official announcements regarding more character card details.
