Yutaka Matsushige "Over the Moon" as 'The Solitary Gourmet' Explodes Overseas: "Heard I'm Bigger Than Shohei Ohtani in Korea!"

Based on the popular manga of the same name, the hit Japanese drama "The Solitary Gourmet," starring Yutaka Matsushige as protagonist Goro Inogashira, has churned out a new season almost every year since 2012. This year saw the release of the series' first-ever movie, "The Solitary Gourmet," which premiered in Japan in January to strong box office success. Fans in Taiwan can look forward to its release on March 14, 2025.

Yutaka Matsushige, currently running ragged on a promotional tour, is certainly putting in the work. As the star of this self-directed and self-produced theatrical film, he's also gearing up for its South Korean release. Matsushige shared that "The Solitary Gourmet" series is incredibly popular in Korea, jokingly admitting he's gotten a little carried away with the news.

Matsushige revealed, "From the planning stages of this film, I've always wanted to collaborate with Korea and do something fun. When I went to Korea for location scouting, even the immigration officer was super friendly, which sparked the idea for Yoo Jae-myung's character. To my surprise, he readily agreed to join the cast." Matsushige praised Yoo Jae-myung's performance, noting that it was almost entirely improvised, allowing them to achieve the desired feel without any constraints.

Matsushige is pumped for the Korean promotions: "Actually, since the TV series, this show has been really popular in Korea, Taiwan, and China. Once, when I was at the Busan Film Festival for an interview, a reporter told me, 'You're more famous than Shohei Ohtani in Korea!' For a moment, I got a little full of myself (laughs). Well, if that's the case, I might as well ride this wave and stir things up in Korea!"

This comment quickly sparked a buzz among netizens on X, with many finding Matsushige's "more famous than Shohei Ohtani" remark absolutely hilarious.

Regarding the design of the Korean movie poster, despite being covered in Korean text, many Japanese netizens chuckled, saying they could somehow tell what it was about even without understanding the language.

▼ Japanese netizens even tried translating it with software, and sure enough... the Japanese versions fit perfectly too! XD

Many netizens also confirmed Matsushige's considerable fame in Korea, acknowledging the immense popularity of "The Solitary Gourmet" there. Some even mentioned knowing Korean friends who learned Japanese by watching the show.

The film is set to officially hit the big screen in Taiwan on March 14, and Yutaka Matsushige will also be visiting Taiwan for a special screening. Fans of Goro, don't miss this chance to support the film and keep Matsushige busy! XD
