To celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence," a limited two-week run of the 4K remastered version is scheduled to hit select Japanese theaters starting February 28, 2025. On March 2, director Mamoru Oshii and Akio Ōtsuka, the voice actor for Batou, appeared at a talk session at TOHO CINEMAS Shinjuku in Tokyo, where they discussed the possibility of a sequel to "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence."

During a "Yes/No" Q&A segment, when asked if they'd like to see a sequel to "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence," Akio Ōtsuka was quick to raise his "Yes" card. After a brief moment of contemplation, Oshii followed suit, also raising his "Yes" card.
Explaining his momentary hesitation, Director Oshii clarified, "There are certain conditions to consider." He added, "I also have another project I haven't finished yet, but if we're talking about this topic, then yes, I would genuinely want to do it."

Of course, with the unfortunate passing of Atsuko Tanaka, the voice actress for Motoko Kusanagi, in August 2024, a major question looms: if a "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence" sequel ever gets greenlit, how would Motoko be handled? Director Oshii addressed this concern directly:
"When considering a sequel, the first thing that comes to mind is — what do we do about Motoko?" Director Oshii continued, "Could a sequel have her exist purely as a 'soul,' much like in 'Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence'? If so, perhaps we could simply have her 'without a voice'? That might work, right? Hmm... maybe we really could do that (laughs). But, of course, this is all purely hypothetical."
