In this digital age, physical book sales are steadily declining. While manga volumes still hold their own, weekly and monthly magazines have been hit hard, making their survival increasingly challenging.
KADOKAWA's light novel literary monthly, Dragon Magazine, which announced in January that it would end its 37-year print run, officially released its final issue today (March 19). Featuring Lina Inverse & Naga the Serpent from "Slayers" on the cover, it's a must-have collector's item for many fans.

Since its launch in January 1988, Dragon Magazine has been a cornerstone of the light novel world. It was the original home for countless popular series that later became anime hits, including "Full Metal Panic!", "Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend", "Slayers", "Date A Live", and "High School DxD". More recently, it featured titles like "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?", "Spy Classroom", and "Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor". These weren't just magazine serials; many exploded into anime, manga, and games, shaping an entire generation of light novel fans.

The final issue's cover features a grand finale appearance by Lina Inverse & Naga the Serpent from "Slayers", alongside the poignant tagline: "Dragon Magazine reaches its grand finale, but our adventure continues!" This special issue also packs a brand-new short story—the first in 13 years—plus a special project celebrating "Slayers"' 35th serialization anniversary!

The official announcement also revealed that after Dragon Magazine ceases publication, a brand-new web magazine, "Mekurimekuru", will take over its light novel content. Set to officially launch in Spring 2025, "Mekurimekuru" will be a comprehensive platform dedicated to light novels, character literature, and various entertainment cultures. It will feature the latest light novel info and recommendations, news on anime, manga, voice actors, events, and a community space for light novel readers.
KADOKAWA stated: "As reading habits evolve, print magazines can no longer fully meet reader demands. We will deliver even richer content in a new format, so please look forward to it!"

The curtain call for Dragon Magazine marks a significant shift in the light novel landscape, but it also heralds the dawn of a new era! How will KADOKAWA develop the light novel market moving forward? What surprises will "Mekurimekuru" bring? If you're a long-time reader of Dragon Magazine, now might be the perfect time to grab that final issue as a piece of history.
