Nintendo Switch 2 Incoming! Can It Dethrone PS2 as the Best-Selling Console? Former PlayStation Boss Weighs In...

The PlayStation 2 still reigns supreme as the world's best-selling game console, boasting over 160 million units sold. But the Nintendo Switch is hot on its heels! Last month, Nintendo officially announced the Switch had blasted past 150 million units globally, putting it just 10 million shy of PS2's legendary record.

However, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden recently chimed in during an interview, suggesting that the impending launch of the Switch 2 could throw a wrench in those record-breaking plans.

"It absolutely could be broken," Layden stated, "but the Switch 2's price point is going to be the ultimate decider. If it's super competitively priced, players might just jump straight to the new hotness instead of grabbing the OG Switch." He believes that if two products from the same brand have a price difference exceeding $150, it makes the consumer's choice a whole lot trickier.

Currently, the OG Switch officially retails for $299, though savvy shoppers can often snag it for less during sales. If the Switch 2 lands too close to that price, it could seriously impact OG Switch sales. However, some market analysts are betting on the Switch 2 launching somewhere between $400 and $500. This could mean the OG Switch still holds appeal for budget-conscious gamers, especially if Nintendo decides to slash its price to clear out existing stock.

Adding another layer to the puzzle, Nintendo recently made a quiet confirmation during their Virtual Game Cards presentation: "Nintendo Switch 2 version games" are on the horizon. These aren't the same as Switch 2 exclusives and might even be compatible with the OG Switch, further complicating player purchase decisions.

So, will the Switch finally smash PS2's two-decade-plus record, or will the Switch 2's arrival halt its ascent? The next-gen console showdown might just play out over the next year.
