Over 50 years since its debut, Riyoko Ikeda's classic shojo manga, "The Rose of Versailles" (Berusaiyu no Bara), received a "completely new" theatrical anime film this year, produced by MAPPA. The film, which premiered in Japan on January 31st, has already raked in over 500 million yen at the Japanese box office—a solid performance for a classic remake.
This iconic series, making its Reiwa-era comeback as a brand-new anime film, just got a huge announcement! Netflix revealed today (April 3) that it will be exclusively streaming worldwide starting April 30, 2025!

"The Rose of Versailles" (Berusaiyu no Bara) was serialized from 1972 to 1973 in Shueisha's shojo manga magazine, Margaret. Set in the opulent Palace of Versailles during the late 18th-century Bourbon dynasty, the story follows a young noblewoman who disguises herself as a man to serve as a palace guard, leading to a beautiful encounter with a princess from the royal family.
With over 20 million copies in circulation, the series has enjoyed immense popularity since its serialization. It has been adapted into a stage musical by the Takarazuka Revue, spawned a TV anime, and ignited a phenomenal social craze, solidifying its status as a shojo manga legend.

Since the theatrical anime film "The Rose of Versailles" only premiered in Japan with no international distribution announcements, many overseas fans were clamoring to see it but had no way to do so. Now that it's confirmed for Netflix, fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief, even if they can't catch it on the big screen.
