Nintendo finally pulled back the curtain on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 during a "Nintendo Direct" presentation in early April. The reveal showcased a slew of new features and games, confirming the console's official launch date for June 5, 2025!
However, just last night (April 23), Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa took to the official Nintendo X (formerly Twitter) account to deliver some sobering news. He revealed that the number of lottery participants in Japan has "exceeded initial expectations by several times over." Facing this colossal demand, current production capacity simply won't cut it, prompting Furukawa to issue an apology to all hopeful consumers.

The announcement quickly propelled "Switch 2 Lottery" to the top of X's trending keywords.

In his official statement, President Furukawa elaborated:
"We were genuinely surprised to find approximately 2.2 million people participating in the lottery within Japan alone, far exceeding our initial expectations. Unfortunately, the number of consoles we anticipate shipping from the My Nintendo Store on June 5 will be completely insufficient to meet this overwhelming demand. Consequently, we expect a significant number of consumers will not be selected in the first wave of lottery results, which will be announced tomorrow, April 24."
"To ease the burden on those who aren't selected, we will automatically include all first-wave non-winners in the second lottery wave, eliminating the need to re-register. However, even with the additional supply from the second wave, we still won't be able to satisfy all registered participants. While we prepared in advance, we deeply regret that we cannot fulfill the wishes of every eager player."
"We are actively working to expand our production scale to address this surge in demand. Simultaneously, starting tomorrow (April 24), various game retailers and online stores across Japan will progressively open pre-orders or lottery sales (please refer to individual store announcements for details). The My Nintendo Store will also continue sales after the console's launch (more detailed sales plans will be announced separately)."
"We will continue to collaborate with our retail partners to increase shipping volumes, hoping to get the Nintendo Switch 2 into more players' hands as soon as possible. Furthermore, we do have plans for continuous large-scale production and shipments moving forward. While it may take some time for everyone to successfully purchase a unit, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and kindly ask for your patience and understanding. Thank you very much for your continued support."

While the massive demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 isn't entirely unexpected, Nintendo had previously indicated plans to bolster production capacity to ensure more players could get their hands on the console sooner. Yet, it seems Japan alone has presented an immediate challenge, with demand far outstripping current supply.
While this issue is currently focused on Japan, it raises questions about whether Nintendo Switch 2 production can ultimately meet global player demand – a challenge that will surely put the company to the test.
