Even before "Thunderbolts" hit theaters, audiences sensed a major character death was coming, with many certain that Taskmaster would be the one to go. Now that the film has officially premiered, those suspicions have been confirmed: Taskmaster is indeed the first and only member of the six Thunderbolts to be written out. Director Jake Schreier recently explained his reasoning behind this decision in an interview.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, Schreier stated, "Obviously, it was a big decision, and we felt like these kinds of movies need that kind of thing, for an audience to feel like, 'If they're willing to do that, then anything's possible.' You don't know exactly where the story's going to go, and it needs a little bit of a shocking or surprising element."
Schreier acknowledged that some viewers had already predicted Taskmaster's demise, noting the character's minimal presence on certain promotional posters and even being removed (or deliberately added) in various versions of the trailer's group shots. However, Jon Watts, director of the first three "Spider-Man" films, advised him not to worry too much. Watts reportedly told Schreier that once the theater lights dim, many audience members forget any prior hints about plot developments, and as a director, his sole focus should be on ensuring the story works.
