Ever watched a streamer add a wild twist to their gameplay? We're talking "restricted playthroughs" (縛りプレイ) – custom rules and constraints that crank up the entertainment factor and pull in the viewers.
Hold up, what if every coin you snagged in Mario Kart meant hitting the brakes for a full-on sutra chant? That's exactly what Japanese Buddhist group THE 南無ズ did in their latest "Ascetic Mario Kart" video on YouTube. All four players are actual monks, and their unique take on "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" has viewers absolutely losing it.
So, who are THE 南無ズ? They're a creative performance collective that mashes up "Buddhism × Comedy × Music." Spun off from the legendary "Monk Band" (坊主バンド) in 2018, the group features four core members: Higanada Bon, the vice-chief priest of Unmonji Temple; Nebasaki Satoru, a funeral home director; Kyo Mugen, a monk; and Ogami Oga, a kimono-clad girl. Yep, their names are as Buddhist as it gets.
These guys aren't just chanting; they're dropping beats and Buddhist wisdom with a side of hilarious humor. Their unique, fun-filled style has them popping up at music venues and street performances everywhere, letting audiences soak in Buddhist culture with a healthy dose of laughter.
For this epic "Ascetic Mario Kart" showdown, THE 南無ズ frontman Higanada Bon rounded up three of his monk buddies. And while their day jobs involve temples and spiritual guidance, don't think for a second they're taking this game lightly.
The "Ascetic Mario Kart" rule is brutally simple: snag a coin, and you must pull over to chant a sutra. Each monk has their designated scripture, turning those shiny coins into a test of spiritual discipline.
Given how impossible it is to avoid coins on the track, the game quickly devolves into a hilarious cycle of sudden stops and synchronized chanting. Picture it: all four monks, mid-race, pulling over to recite sutras. It's pure, unadulterated absurdity.
The comments section blew up, with netizens chiming in: "The Mario Kart devs *definitely* didn't see this coming," "Even with all the chanting, I bet they're still feeling the frustration," and "Seeing these monks have so much fun, even Buddha himself must be smiling down on them."
