After many viewers saw "Sinners" recently, there was a strong desire for writer-director Ryan Coogler to take over Marvel Studios' long-stalled new "Blade" film, which also deals with vampire hunting. Coogler has already directed two "Black Panther" movies for Marvel, leading many fans to believe he would be a convenient choice to help salvage the "Blade" project.
Interestingly, while Coogler currently only plans to direct "Black Panther 3" and has no intention of helming "Blade," the two vampire-themed projects have still found a connection.
Sev Ohanian, a long-time collaborator and producer with Coogler, recently discussed the unexpected link during an interview promoting their latest Marvel series, "Ironheart." Ohanian revealed that the original "Blade" film, which was set in a non-modern era, never went into production, leaving its completed period costumes unused. Coincidentally, "Sinners" required a large number of costumes from a similar historical period, and their costume designer, Ruth E. Carter, had also worked on the "Blade" project. Leveraging this connection, the "Sinners" production acquired all the leftover "Blade" costumes, using them for some of their background actors.

Ohanian explained, "Ruth Carter was working on the 'Blade' movie that ended up not shooting. At one point that movie was going to deal with—and she's talked about this before—but at one point that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as 'Sinners.' She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, 'Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow.' And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price." Ohanian emphasized that only background actors wore the existing "Blade" costumes, while the main cast still wore newly designed original outfits.
