HBO's "The Last of Us" Season 3 Expected in 2027; Executive Hints at Potential Final Chapter

The third season of the HBO original series "The Last of Us" is slated for a 2027 release, a timeline officially confirmed by HBO Head of Drama Casey Bloys in a recent interview with Variety. Bloys also indicated that this upcoming season might serve as the show's final chapter.

Despite the second season receiving mixed reviews and original game creator Neil Druckmann confirming his departure from the series' production, Bloys expressed full confidence in showrunner Craig Mazin.

"Craig is currently evaluating whether it needs to be two seasons or if he can wrap up the story in one," Bloys stated. "Regardless, I will respect his pace and his decision."

The third season will also see a significant shift in its central characters. Kaitlyn Dever, who portrays Abby, is set to take on a leading role, succeeding Pedro Pascal, who has exited the cast. Bella Ramsey's Ellie will no longer be the primary focus of the narrative.

Regarding whether such a transition would affect audience acceptance, Bloys stated that he doesn't believe it will cause a significant impact. He explained that "The Last of Us" brand has already built a strong reputation, and the original game itself boasts a massive fan base. Bloys views the series' ability to extend its story from different character perspectives as a creative advantage.

As for Druckmann's departure, Bloys expressed understanding and affirmation. He mentioned that Druckmann will focus on Naughty Dog's new project, "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet," a decision Bloys deemed necessary for both the game and the company's development.

"Neil has his own full-time job and responsibilities, but he has laid an excellent foundation for the series," Bloys commented. "Craig is also incredibly professional, and I completely trust him to continue this journey."

While the first season of "The Last of Us" garnered widespread acclaim, the second season sparked considerable discussion due to its pacing and character shifts. As the series approaches its potential final chapter, fans eagerly await the conclusion of this post-apocalyptic saga.
