DreamWorks Animation's highly anticipated sequel, "Shrek 5," which has been in development for years, was initially slated for a December 23, 2026 Christmas release in North American theaters. However, the studio today unexpectedly announced a significant delay, pushing the film's premiere to the summer slot of June 30, 2027. Distributor Universal Pictures did not provide an official reason for the decision. Concurrently, Universal also moved an untitled new film from its other animation powerhouse, Illumination Entertainment, from its original June 30, 2027 date to April 16, 2027, to accommodate the "Shrek 5" schedule change.

Despite the new release window, "Shrek 5" will still face a formidable competitor in June 2027. The film is now set to arrive just five days after "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse," the concluding chapter of the acclaimed animated trilogy, which is scheduled for release on June 25, 2027. This close proximity is expected to create a notable box office rivalry between the two animated blockbusters.

"Shrek 5" is being co-directed by Walt Dohrn, known for the "Trolls" series, and Conrad Vernon, who previously co-directed "Shrek 2." The core voice cast from the first four films is confirmed to return, including Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. Additionally, Zendaya is joining the cast to voice Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona.
