Elizabeth Olsen Debunks Long-Term Scarlet Witch MCU Plans: "Marvel Only Gives One Proposal at a Time"

For years, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans have debated the future of the Scarlet Witch, with some convinced Marvel had a long-term blueprint while others believed plans had been abandoned. However, Elizabeth Olsen, who portrays the character, recently clarified at Los Angeles Comic Con that neither theory holds true.

During a panel alongside Paul Bettany, who plays Vision, Olsen revealed, "I've never been given more than one proposal at a time. It's almost always one at a time." This statement definitively crushed speculation about whether Marvel had a long-term plan for her character, Wanda Maximoff.

She further illustrated her point, citing her transition from "WandaVision" to "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" as the clearest evidence.

Despite her significant role in the Disney+ series, she was completely unaware of her future, only being informed weeks before filming that her character would become the main antagonist.

"I thought I was just part of an ensemble, and I thought I was a good guy, and then three weeks before I flew to London, they told me, 'You're the main villain,'" Olsen stated, adding that if she had known sooner, she could have at least laid groundwork for the character's turn.

For many fans, hearing Olsen lament the inability to foreshadow Wanda's descent into darkness was particularly disappointing. "WandaVision" was widely considered an MCU highlight, but a more organic fall for Wanda in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" might have provided a more complete character arc.

Olsen explained that she could only adjust her performance in "Doctor Strange" as much as possible, attempting to provide an alternative narrative context for the character.

Regarding the Scarlet Witch's future, Olsen admitted it presents a challenge for an actor. She said, "Sometimes I feel like I've done so much for her, what else can I do to surprise the audience? I'm not sure right now; I need a good story to help me find direction."

Currently, Olsen is not listed in the cast for the MCU's next major ensemble film, "Avengers: Doomsday," which is slated for release on December 18, 2026.
