We've previously featured the incredible modeler Nicovol (@nicovol48), who blew us away with his painted Bandai Shokugan God Gundam. Now, he's back with another masterpiece, this time tackling a "Zaku II" mini-model from the Gundam tabletop game, "GUNDAM ASSEMBLE." And once again, his insane painting skills have left netizens absolutely stunned.
『GUNDAM ASSEMBLE』 is a tabletop game that uses roughly 5cm tall Gundam models as playing pieces. A collaborative version with "GUNDAM CARD GAME" already launched in July. This blend of miniature assembly models and tabletop strategy has really captivated Gundam fans, especially with its cool mini-diorama designs.
Nicovol shared that he put extra effort into capturing the Zaku II's powerful pose, especially with its "Heat Hawk" raised high. He focused on gradient and edge highlights to give the entire piece more depth. His work-in-progress photos show his meticulous process: starting with a dark base, then layering on brighter colors to achieve those subtle light and shadow variations.
Even the markings on the shoulders and shield are hand-painted, and he crafted the background and base himself. For an even finer detail, knowing that the Heat Hawk's blade glows red hot, Nicovol added orange reflections to the back of the Zaku's head and shoulders, perfectly simulating the metal's heat reflection.
The finished product transforms the mini Gundam model into something incredibly dynamic and impactful, looking like it's about to leap right off its base! Netizens flooded the comments with praise: "That glowing Heat Hawk is insane!" "The texture is absolutely divine!" "I really want to try painting reflections like that!"
Nicovol's Zaku II entry also competed in Bandai's recent "Gundam Assemble Painting Contest," where it snagged first place and the top award among numerous submissions. Official recognition for some serious talent!
