Recently on X in Japan, user Ashima (@ashimo_nrx004) shared their incredible creation: a desktop trash can bought from a 100-yen store, transformed into a Scopedog model from the classic mecha anime, Armored Trooper VOTOMS. This creative mod quickly earned praise from netizens.
Armored Trooper VOTOMS, directed by Ryosuke Takahashi and produced by Sunrise, is an early 80s mecha anime series with subsequent OVA releases. For many veteran mecha fans, it's an undeniable classic.
This particular Scopedog-themed trash can uses a desktop trash can from a 100-yen store as its base, combined with the head parts included with the inaugural issue of "Weekly Armored Trooper VOTOMS: Build a Scopedog."

Ashima, a model painting enthusiast, explained his motivation: "I hadn't practiced rust effects in a while, so I wanted to brush up on them." He decided to take a previous Scopedog trash can build and challenge himself to achieve an even higher level of realism.
For this project, he used a desktop trash can from DAISO. He started by cutting off the "ears" on both sides of the lid, then flipped and reattached it. The head's structure naturally conceals the cuts, making it look like an original design.
To ensure better paint adhesion, he first applied a primer. Missing parts were filled in with plastic sheets, utilizing a variety of model-making techniques. Plus, his painted rust effects, chipped paint, and grime textures are incredibly realistic.
It's worth noting that the "Scopedog head + trash can" combo isn't his original idea; others have done it before. Ashima humbly stated, "The person who first came up with this idea is truly creative, and I respect that."
The post immediately sparked a huge reaction. Comments like "Please mass-produce this!", "Aren't you going to paint the shoulders red?", and "This paint job is seriously cool!" poured in, generating a buzz online.
But this is still a work in progress. Next, Ashima plans to add more "weathering" to the visor and the overall model, aiming for an even more authentic feel. He also mentioned, "I want to readjust the shading I specifically left for photography," showcasing his dedication to perfection.
Turning a cheap "100-yen trash can" into a masterpiece like this is truly impressive. The creativity and execution are top-notch! Maybe you can try this kind of mod yourself—perhaps a Gundam Zaku, Haro, or Ball could work too!
