The iconic Japanese drama and film series "Bayside Shakedown," starring Yuji Oda, has spanned an incredible 18 years. Late 2024 saw the exciting announcement of a new film, "Bayside Shakedown N.E.W."
Today (10/31), the official announcement dropped: filming has begun! They also released a sneak peek of Yuji Oda in action as protagonist Shunsaku Aoshima. Get ready, because the movie is slated for a Fall 2026 release!
This marks Yuji Oda's grand return to Aoshima's iconic coat, 13 years after the 2012 series film "Bayside Shakedown The Final." Official photos capture the familiar Aoshima figure in Shinjuku West Exit, bag in hand, being chased by a crowd – looks like another major incident is brewing, and we're here for it!
Oda commented, "Even though it's been 13 years since I last played Aoshima, I was a little nervous, but surprisingly, I was able to get into character calmly." He also happily added, "You've all waited so long, and 'Bayside Shakedown' is finally back!" He hopes fans will look forward to seeing it on the big screen.
The first day of filming kicked off in downtown Shinjuku, starting with heavy rain and about 400 extras gathered on set. But then, a miracle! The rain stopped just as Oda appeared in Aoshima's signature green coat. He chuckled, "I thought filming might be canceled, but the weather cleared up right before we started. That kind of luck is totally 'Bayside Shakedown' style!" The day's highlight was an action-packed scene where Aoshima was chased by 400 people through the streets of Shinjuku, a truly spectacular sight.
Reflecting on the new film, Oda recalled a joke he once made: "If there's another 'Bayside Shakedown,' it'll probably be when I'm the same age as Heihachiro Waku." Now, returning to the role at an age similar to his late senior, Chosuke Ikariya—who played Aoshima's beloved mentor, Waku—he feels the passage of time deeply and is filled with emotion.
