The King of the Monsters, Godzilla, is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a slew of ongoing projects. This includes the recently released 31st live-action film, Godzilla Minus One, also helmed by director Takashi Yamazaki.
Today (November 29), the official announcement dropped for a brand-new anime series, and this one's a game-changer: for the first time in the franchise's 70-plus year history, it will tell the story of a "boy who harbors Godzilla's power within him."
This new project is unlike any previous Godzilla work, including the live-action films. It's the series' inaugural attempt to feature a "boy" as the protagonist, and not just any boy – one who possesses the raw power of Godzilla. Is he human, or is he something more akin to the kaiju king? The animation team behind this ambitious endeavor is a joint effort between Orange, known for their work on Godzilla Singular Point, and the talented Thai animation studio Igloo Studio.
Historically, Godzilla has always been the "God of Destruction," an opposing force to humanity. But with Godzilla's power now residing within a human boy, the lines are blurred. Does he remain human, or does he lean closer to his monstrous namesake? These intriguing questions will undoubtedly be answered in future updates.
Keiji Ota, Head of TOHO's IP & Animation Division and CGO, commented, "For 70 years since its birth, Godzilla has consistently served as a mirror reflecting the times. This theme, 'a boy who harbors Godzilla's power,' marks a historic first for the series, and I believe it will offer a profound portrayal of the fears and hopes of modern society. This also represents a significant step for TOHO animation as we venture into new storytelling frontiers."
