Koji Kira's 'Sekitou Elegy' Gets Live-Action Drama Adaptation After 20 Years, Starring Koyo Kurosaki and Yui Narumi

Manga artist Koji Kira's romance manga, "Sekitou Elegy" (赤灯えれじい), serialized in "Weekly Young Magazine," officially announced today (August 19) that it will be adapted into a live-action Japanese drama. Actors Koyo Kurosaki and Yui Narumi are set to co-star, with the series scheduled to premiere on October 8, 2026.

The original "Sekitou Elegy," created by Koji Kira, was serialized in "Weekly Young Magazine" from 2005 to 2009, concluding with 15 tankobon volumes.

The story follows Tomofumi Yanagawa (played by Koyo Kurosaki), a cowardly man who lives with his parents, is unemployed, and spends his days in self-indulgent idleness. He's also constantly extorted by local delinquents. To escape this miserable existence, he takes a part-time job as a traffic controller.

On the job, while waving his red signal light, he's often mocked by unreasonable drivers. It's there that he meets a woman who is his complete opposite: the blonde, hot-headed, fight-loving delinquent girl Tomoko Akiyama (played by Yui Narumi). Initially terrified of Tomoko's strong personality, Tomofumi gradually discovers her gentle side as they spend time together, and he slowly finds himself drawn to her. Set against the backdrop of Osaka, a city brimming with warmth and everyday charm, this awkward, imperfect, yet utterly endearing pure love story between an odd couple begins.

For years, the work has been regarded by readers as the author's "timeless masterpiece," continuing to receive strong fan support even after the manga concluded. Now, approximately 20 years after the original work ended, a live-action drama adaptation is finally being officially released. This "Osaka youth pure love comedy," filled with warm humor and a youthful vibe, is set to air this autumn on TV Tokyo and will be distributed to audiences across Asia.

The male lead, Tomofumi Yanagawa, is played by Koyo Kurosaki. Kurosaki officially debuted in the 2023 NHK morning drama "Boogie Woogie" and has since appeared in acclaimed works like "Saba Can." He has also received multiple newcomer awards, including the 99th Kinema Junpo Best New Actor Award.

The female lead, Tomoko Akiyama, is played by Yui Narumi. Narumi made her drama debut in the NHK morning drama "Natsuzora" and has since appeared in works such as the Taiga drama "Dousuru Ieyasu."

Both actors are taking on their first leading roles in a drama series. These rising young talents, both hailing from the Kansai region, have been making waves in various popular productions. This time, they will portray an "odd couple" with completely opposite personalities who are surprisingly well-matched, delivering their lines in authentic Kansai dialect.

To commemorate the live-action drama adaptation, author Koji Kira has drawn a special new illustration. Furthermore, a long-awaited new sequel to the original manga has also been announced. Koji Kira stated that it has been approximately 20 years since the manga concluded, and he never imagined a live-action drama adaptation would happen at this point.

He mentioned that the production team has shown the utmost respect for the original work from the scriptwriting stage. They have condensed the story from the 15 tankobon volumes into the drama's runtime and re-adjusted it for contemporary audiences. He also expressed gratitude to all the cast and crew, emphasizing that even those unfamiliar with the original manga are sure to enjoy the drama.

Coinciding with the live-action drama's release, "Young Magazine" will begin serializing the latest sequel, "Sekitou Elegy 2024," starting with issue No. 46, on sale October 13, 2026, kicking off a brand new story.

Fans of the original work might want to check out this live-action drama, arriving after a 20-year hiatus, and see if it captures the heartwarming and slice-of-life charm of the original.
