Chiikawa’s first animated feature, Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island, has been a box-office hit since opening on July 24, with five consecutive waves of admission bonuses helping to keep the momentum going.
On September 21, the film’s official team announced that it had earned a cumulative ¥15.84 billion and sold 10.857 million tickets as of September 20, its 59th day in theaters. That puts it ahead of Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway to become the highest-grossing film released in Japan in 2026.
A new batch of stills was also released, including shots of the characters brimming with anticipation and excitement, plus a fresh scene showing Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi flashing bright, carefree smiles after their adventure. The team thanked every fan who headed to theaters and asked audiences to keep supporting the film.
Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island previously crossed the ¥10 billion mark in just 30 days. While that pace fell short of the blistering speed set by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Detective Conan, it remains an impressive achievement for the franchise’s first theatrical feature.
Now sitting above ¥15.8 billion after nearly two months, the film has settled into steady growth even if its pace has eased since opening. With new admission bonuses continuing to roll out, further giveaways and cheer screenings could keep it climbing—and potentially push it toward the next major milestone of ¥20 billion.
