Oishinbo, the culinary manga written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, is officially returning to television with its first new anime in more than three decades. Production of New Oishinbo was announced on September 19.
On September 24, the team confirmed that New Oishinbo will premiere in 2027 and unveiled its main voice cast.
Oishinbo began serialization in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits in 1983. The landmark food manga has released 111 collected volumes to date and was previously adapted into a television anime in 1988.
The story follows Shiro Yamaoka and Yuko Kurita, food journalists at Tōzai News assigned to create the newspaper's Ultimate Menu. Along the way, they meet people from all walks of life and use the power of food to help solve their problems.
The new series picks up the fierce culinary showdown between Tōzai News' Ultimate Menu and the Supreme Menu led by Yuzan Kaibara. While preserving the passion, energy, and unmistakable 1990s atmosphere of the previous anime, the sequel will also serve up an entirely new chapter.
Adding another layer to the drama is Dan Ichiro, the young president of Daiken who steps in to referee the competition. After falling for Yuko Kurita at first sight, he becomes tangled in a slow-burning romantic triangle with Yuko and Shiro Yamaoka, bringing even more flavor to both the food battles and the story.
The main cast has also been announced: Yohei Azakami will voice protagonist Shiro Yamaoka, Hitomi Sasaki will play heroine Yuko Kurita, and Akio Otsuka will take on the role of Yuzan Kaibara.

About his character
He may be lazy and unremarkable on the surface, but his passion for food and his personal sense of aesthetics run deeper than most. At the same time, although he despises Yuzan Kaibara, he has inherited many things from him. So which side truly defines who he is?
With every episode, I feel as though I am wandering around looking for somewhere to eat that night, gradually discovering how to portray him. Perhaps Ms. Kurita is the person who will ultimately point him in the right direction.

Having watched the previous television anime myself, I am deeply aware of the significance and responsibility that come with playing Shiro Yamaoka. People's values and sense of beauty have gradually changed since the manga first began serialization. By looking back at the work from where we stand today, I hope we can present its appeal as naturally and honestly as the flavor of the ingredients themselves. My first impression of her was that she was both charming and dependable. But once I began playing her, I discovered that she occasionally says things that make you stop and think, “Wait, did she really just slip in a savage remark that casually?” I think that side of her is part of the charm she develops while navigating life alongside such a strong-willed cast of characters.

Surrounded by so many legendary voice actors, what I felt most strongly was not nervousness, but a wonderful sense of comfort and ease. Many people in the studio are Oishinbo fans, and everyone talks about their favorite scenes and lines. More than once, I heard someone say, “I look forward to recording every week.” It was a studio filled with genuine love for Oishinbo.

Hello, everyone. I'm Akio Otsuka, and this time I'll be playing Yuzan Kaibara. That's right, it's me again. I accepted the role. You're probably thinking, “Akio Otsuka again?” Yes, me again! At this point, I might as well change my name to Chikao Otsuka, since my father Chikao Otsuka played him back then.
In any case, he was already one stubborn old man when the original series aired, and watching him again today, he is still quite something. He is the kind of self-proclaimed king of everything who makes you instinctively take a step back. He is also a tricky character who now has to contend with modern standards and compliance rules, so I will do my best to bring him to life. Please look forward to it!
