Classic racing anime Future GPX Cyber Formula is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Back in April, the franchise announced that a brand-new short anime was in production, continuing the story of Future GPX Cyber Formula SIN.
On September 26, the official team revealed that the 1996 TV compilation Future GPX Cyber Formula EARLY DAYS RENEWAL will receive an HD digital restoration and be re-edited as the MOVIE EDITION. It will screen alongside the new short anime currently in production, with both hitting Japanese theaters on February 19, 2027.
Originally released in 1996, the two-part TV compilation Future GPX Cyber Formula EARLY DAYS RENEWAL is being digitally restored in HD. Under the supervision of series director Mitsuo Fukuda, the footage will be re-edited into the MOVIE EDITION, bringing the classic racing action to the big screen in newly remastered quality.
The new short anime, produced as part of the franchise’s 35th anniversary celebrations, has also received its official title: Future GPX Cyber Formula ASURADA. The short will serve as a direct sequel to the fourth OVA series, 1998’s Future GPX Cyber Formula SIN, and depict “a brand-new year of Cyber Formula.”
Longtime series machine designer Shoji Kawamori also unveiled two new Cyber Machines: the newly designed Zenith Asurada AKF-S0/G and the previously unseen Houou AA-1. Both machines will appear in the upcoming short anime.
Officials also released several stills from Future GPX Cyber Formula ASURADA. Naturally, they are packed with racing machines and circuits—with not a single character in sight.
Series director Mitsuo Fukuda previously described the project with one very clear mission statement:
“A brand-new year of Cyber Formula, condensed into six minutes.”
This project is a short anime running approximately six minutes. Yet within that brief runtime, it captures an entire new year of Cyber Formula. That limited length allows us to present what is happening in this world right now with even greater density and speed.
The story is a direct continuation of Future GPX Cyber Formula SIN. It explores what comes after that battle—the new season awaiting the characters and the first signs of change. For the production, we invited veteran staff members who previously worked on the franchise, while also bringing in a new generation of creators inspired by the series. The result is a production where a legacy spanning generations meets fresh creative ideas.
We also revisited and rebuilt various elements of the setting, including the racing regulations and machine designs. While respecting everything the series has established, we reconstructed its world through a modern lens to pursue a new vision for Future GPX Cyber Formula. Visually, everything from the characters to the racing machines has been produced entirely with hand-drawn animation, without using CG. We hope viewers can feel the speed, weight, and tangible sense of motion that only hand-drawn animation can deliver. It may be a short film, but every shot carries the same passion as the series before it. We hope you will witness the moment this brand-new year begins.
For longtime fans, seeing Future GPX Cyber Formula race onto the big screen after all these years—bringing both a remastered classic and an entirely new story—is plenty of reason to get excited.
The double feature is scheduled to open in Japanese theaters on February 19, 2027. More details will be announced at a later date.
