Created by manga artist Hideaki Sorachi, the irreverent comedy Gintama is celebrating its anime adaptation’s 20th anniversary this year. The franchise also returned to theaters with the new film New Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames, earning plenty of praise from fans.
Now, the franchise has announced that its application to the Japan Anniversary Association has been approved, officially designating October 10—the birthday of protagonist Gintoki Sakata—as Gintama Day in celebration of the anime’s 20th anniversary.
That’s right: October 10 is officially on the books as Gintama Day! To mark the occasion, the Gintama Channel on YouTube will kick off a livestream and a massive 10-hour anime marathon at 10:00 a.m. Japan time. Meanwhile, 12 theaters across Japan will host special heckling and cheer-along screenings of New Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames — Super Flame Edition.
So remember the password: “Gintama Is Forever Filthy” (銀魂は永久に不潔です). On October 10, it’s time to celebrate all things Gintama!
During a ceremony held at a stage greeting event, Tomokazu Sugita accepted the official anniversary registration certificate on behalf of Gintoki Sakata, prompting thunderous applause from the audience.
Reacting to the official recognition of Gintama Day, Sugita said: “Thank you so much. I think this proves just how deeply Gintama has become embedded in people’s lives. There’s an approval process, so not just anything can be registered as an official anniversary. Now that it has been formally recognized, perhaps more people will learn that October 10 is Gintama Day. Maybe it’ll even appear on calendars someday. The next step is to make it a national holiday.”
Daisuke Sakaguchi, the voice of Shinpachi Shimura, joked: “In true Gintama fashion, I hope everyone treats Gintama Day as an excuse to spend the entire day doing absolutely nothing.” Rie Kugimiya, the voice of Kagura, nodded in agreement: “So from now on, October 10 is officially a day when we can keep doing absolutely nothing forever!”
With Gintama Day now officially established, more anniversary-themed plans are likely on the way. We’ll have to wait and see what thoroughly Gintama-style surprises the team has lined up for fans.
