ONE PIECE kicked off its highly anticipated Elbaph Arc this April, and the series remains as popular as ever. Episode 1180 aired on September 27, marking the anime’s final episode of 2026.
Following the broadcast, the official team announced that the next new episode will air in 2027, though an exact return date has yet to be revealed.
The official X account also posted: “Thank you for watching the final episode of the ONE PIECE TV anime this year. The next episode will air in 2027! Please stay tuned for further details on the broadcast schedule.”
The ONE PIECE anime entered the Elbaph Arc this April, but the shift had already been outlined last October. During a ONE PIECE NEWS program streamed on the official ONE PIECE YouTube channel, the team announced that recap episodes would be dropped beginning in 2026, with the anime airing no more than 26 episodes per year.
The program featured former Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief and current ONE PIECE media editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano, alongside Toei Animation’s ONE PIECE series producer Ryuta Koike, who explained the changes to the anime’s production strategy.
Discussing the decision to cap the series at 26 episodes per year from 2026 onward, Nakano asked: “Have you been pushing the production quality so high and working so hard that the budget has become stretched?”
Koike firmly denied it: “Absolutely not!” He explained that many viewers wanted the main story to continue without recap episodes, so the team decided to eliminate recaps beginning in 2026 and air new story content every week during each broadcast run, allowing fans to stay immersed in the narrative. “We do owe everyone an honest apology for reducing the number of episodes, but there is a very important reason behind this decision.”
Nakano followed up by asking whether the production team had simply become overwhelmed.
Koike again said no. He explained that the 26-episode annual cap was designed to bring the anime closer to a one-manga-chapter-per-episode format, giving viewers a fuller experience of the original story. As for the thinking behind the change, Koike said: “We want to strengthen our production structure, dive deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world, and deliver the story in a more concentrated format.”
Given ONE PIECE’s sheer length, moving away from a year-round schedule makes sense. Twenty-six episodes still amounts to two full cours each year. Meanwhile, the new anime adaptation THE ONE PIECE is set to arrive on Netflix in February 2027, followed by the theatrical film ONE PIECE FILM GOD VALLEY in summer 2027.
