DeAgostini Unveils "Evangelion" Kishu Maki-e Mini Plates and Chopstick Sets Crafted with Centuries-Old Techniques

Marking the TV anime’s 30th anniversary, Evangelion remains as popular as ever. The steady stream of collaborations is proof that the series has lost none of its appeal over the past three decades.

DeAgostini Japan has now unveiled DeAgostini mini plates featuring Kishu maki-e, each individually finished by skilled artisans, along with maki-e chopstick sets crafted from natural wood and lacquer. Both collections are available to order through the DeAgostini online store and EVA STORE.

Kishu maki-e is a classic decorative technique associated with Kishu lacquerware, one of Japan’s three major lacquerware traditions. The craft originated in the Kuroe district of Kainan, Wakayama Prefecture.

With a history spanning roughly 600 years, the technique involves painting designs in lacquer before sprinkling gold or silver powder onto the surface while it is still wet. Materials such as metal and shell may also be inlaid to create an ornate, dimensional finish.
