"Hunter × Hunter" Creator Yoshihiro Togashi Scales Back Work Due to Health, Prioritizes Manga

Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter × Hunter finally returned to Weekly Shonen Jump in late June 2026 following an extended hiatus. However, after reaching Chapter 420, the series went back on hiatus until further notice.

On the evening of October 5, Togashi posted on X that he had experienced a series of physical and mental health issues. After completing his existing commitments, he will no longer accept assignments with deadlines and will instead focus on producing his own manga manuscripts.

In a post on X, Togashi wrote:

“Following a series of physical and mental health issues, I will complete the assignments I have already accepted, but will no longer take on work with deadlines. I will prioritize producing my own manuscripts. Once I resume working on them, I will post another update here.”

Given Togashi’s well-documented health struggles, some fans may wonder why he was still taking on outside assignments at all. A look through his X account shows that he occasionally posts progress updates on commissioned work. Although he has not revealed what those projects involve, it is clear that he has been juggling additional commitments alongside his manga manuscripts.

Togashi did not explain exactly what happened or elaborate on the physical and mental health issues he mentioned, though his post suggests that his condition has been far from ideal. Even so, he remains committed to drawing his manga, making it clear that he wants to devote his full attention to Hunter × Hunter.

▼ In his latest progress update, Togashi announced in mid-September that the manuscript for Chapter 428 was complete. By late September, he had also finished coloring the cover for an upcoming collected volume.

Hunter × Hunter returned this year with Chapter 411 in the Weekly Shonen Jump issue released on June 29 and continued through Chapter 420 in the issue released on September 7. There is currently no word on when serialization will resume. For now, fans can only hope Togashi gets the time he needs to recover and continue working at a sustainable pace.
