Daniel Kaluuya Recalls Chadwick Boseman's Kindness: "He Saw My Life Was About to Change and Reached Out"

In 2020, "Black Panther" star Chadwick Boseman passed away at 43 after a battle with colon cancer. His profound kindness and care for those around him, however, remain a lasting legacy.

Daniel Kaluuya, who portrayed W'Kabi in the first "Black Panther" film, rose to prominence with Jordan Peele's horror hit "Get Out" and later won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Judas and the Black Messiah." However, when he was filming "Black Panther," none of these career-defining moments had yet occurred.

"Meeting Chad was one of the most pivotal moments of my life," Kaluuya recently recalled at a BFI London Film Festival event. "I remember we had dinner, and he saw that my life was about to change [because of "Get Out"], but I didn't even know it yet. He approached me then; I was about to start my press tour, and I didn't even have a publicist."

"He took the time to care about everyone around him. He and Lupita Nyong'o were both running around on set, but they saw that my life was about to change."

"He understood that I needed some help and guidance, even though I hadn't asked and didn't know how to. He was like an older brother, reaching out to me proactively. Then, after "Get Out" came out, he gave a very profound speech on my birthday."

Kaluuya also expressed his heartache knowing Boseman worked on the Marvel films while battling illness. "He was an amazing leader on set. My heart aches for him, because working on these Marvel films is incredibly tough, especially performing action scenes in those suits in hot weather. It's a huge physical toll... To know that he was enduring all of that while completing this work, I truly can't find the right words to describe it."
