Blizzard's Former President Accuses "Marvel Rivals" of "Overwatch" Plagiarism: "Black Widow's Name Even Sounds Like Widowmaker!"

"Marvel Rivals," the third-person PvP game co-developed by Marvel Comics and China's NetEase, officially launched today as a free-to-play title across multiple platforms including Steam, Epic Games, and PlayStation 5. Within hours of its release, the game garnered over 440,000 players, quickly becoming one of the most talked-about multiplayer games recently.

However, shortly after "Marvel Rivals" hit the market, former Blizzard Entertainment President Mike Ybarra unexpectedly came forward to accuse the highly anticipated Marvel game of plagiarizing "Overwatch," Blizzard's own first-person multiplayer shooter.

The day before "Marvel Rivals" launched, Mike Ybarra took to X (formerly Twitter) to mock the third-person PvP game, drawing comparisons to the recently controversial Chinese Tencent game, "Light of Motiram."

"The 'Overwatch' version of 'Marvel Rivals' seems to be launching tomorrow (December 6th), just like China's 'Light of Motiram'," Mike Ybarra stated. "I mean... look, even the character names are so similar! 'Widowmaker' and 'Black Widow.' Laughable, NetEase and Tencent are all the same."

Of course, it is widely known that the character "Black Widow" first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1964, boasting a history of over 60 years. Consequently, Ybarra's tweet was quickly met with ridicule from many users, and X's Community Notes swiftly issued a correction. The note pointed out that "Black Widow" has existed for over 50 years, and even her live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe debut was in 2010, whereas "Overwatch" launched much later, in 2016.

Furthermore, even if Mike Ybarra's comparison focused on the gameplay mechanics of "Marvel Rivals'" Black Widow and "Overwatch's" Widowmaker, there remain clear differences. For instance, in "Overwatch," Widowmaker's "Infra-Sight" ability, when activated, temporarily reveals the location of enemies out of sight. In contrast, "Marvel Rivals'" Black Widow's "Electro-Plasma Explosion" ability is triggered by mines, slowing down enemies and reducing their movement capabilities.

Notably, Mike Ybarra later deleted his controversial tweet that had sparked widespread discussion. However, this action did not halt the ongoing debate regarding the similarities between "Marvel Rivals" and "Overwatch."

In fact, Mike Ybarra is not the first to accuse "Marvel Rivals" of resembling "Overwatch." Character designer Alec Dawson and game director Aaron Keller, both of whom previously worked on the development of "Overwatch," had also made similar comments.
