Universal Pictures today announced several release date adjustments for its upcoming animated features. DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek 5," for instance, has been pushed from its original July 1, 2026, summer slot to a December 23, 2026, Christmas release. Next year also marks the 25th anniversary of the first "Shrek" film, and DreamWorks is expected to host celebratory events.
"Shrek 5" will be co-directed by Walt Dohrn, known for the "Trolls" franchise, and Conrad Vernon, who co-directed "Shrek 2." The core voice cast from the previous four films is confirmed to return, with Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona.

Meanwhile, another major sequel, "Minions & Monsters" (the third installment in the "Minions" series), has been moved up significantly from its original June 30, 2027, release to July 1, 2026. This new date was previously held by "Shrek 5," meaning both highly anticipated animated films will now hit theaters next year. Additionally, Universal has shifted an untitled Illumination film, from the same creative team behind the "Minions" franchise, from March 19, 2027, to June 2027.
"Minions & Monsters" will see Pierre Coffin, director of the first three "Despicable Me" films and the original "Minions" movie, return to direct. The voice cast for the film has not yet been announced.
