Fans who closely follow director Martin Scorsese's upcoming projects know that many of his current developments diverge from his familiar gangster themes. However, today, Deadline unexpectedly revealed that Scorsese is now suddenly developing another gangster film, one that is already set to unite his frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio with "Jungle Cruise" co-stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

While the film's title remains under wraps, it is known to be based on a little-known true historical event. The screenplay comes from Nick Bilton, known for the HBO series "The Idol." Set in Hawaii during the 1960s and 1970s, the story follows a powerful, ruthless, and charismatic Hawaiian crime boss who infiltrates the underworld to gain ultimate power, ostensibly to protect his homeland. He establishes a formidable criminal empire on the island, engaging in brutal wars with mainland corporations and rival crime syndicates. Deadline describes the project as "the last great American gangster saga."
Reportedly, the project was initially pitched to Scorsese and DiCaprio by Johnson and Blunt. All four are attached as producers, and multiple studios are currently preparing to bid for distribution rights.
