The "2025 Osaka-Kansai World Expo," kicking off in April 2025, is shaping up to be Japan's biggest event of the year. Bandai Namco is even getting in on the action with a "Gundam Pavilion" featuring a life-sized RX-78F00/E Gundam that's already got everyone talking.
Back in February, Japan Airlines (JAL) announced a massive collaboration with Bandai Namco: the "JAL × GUNDAM FLY TO THE FUTURE PROJECT." Their mission? To create a special "JAL Gundam JET." Well, today (March 3) that dream became a reality as the plane officially took its maiden flight, revealing its stunning livery and instantly grabbing netizen attention.
This morning, JAL held the grand unveiling of the "JAL Gundam JET" at their Tokyo Haneda Airport maintenance center. The Boeing 737-800 (tail number JA342J) then made its inaugural flight from Haneda to Tokushima at 3:35 PM. It's slated to operate until around November, flying various domestic routes.
The "JAL Gundam JET" isn't just a symbol of the JAL-Bandai Namco partnership; it's a perfect fusion of Expo tech and Gundam awesomeness!
On the rear of the fuselage (both sides), you'll spot the "RX-78F00/E Gundam (EX-001 Glass Feather equipped)," the very same mobile suit set to appear at the Bandai Namco "GUNDAM NEXT FUTURE PAVILION."
Up front, the plane proudly features Myaku-Myaku, the official mascot of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, adding a playful touch!
And that's not all! Officials have teased that when the Expo officially opens in April, the cabin seats will feature special headrest covers. JAL Class J (Business Class) will rock a fiery red design, a nod to Gundam's passionate spirit, while Economy Class will sport a sleek black, offering understated cool with undeniable Gundam flair!
One Japanese netizen who snagged a seat on the maiden flight even joked about finding "Earth Federation Forces" propaganda flyers onboard. The best part? The pilot actually announced over the intercom, "Does a specially painted plane fly three times faster than usual?" It had everyone in stitches!
