Ian McKellen Urges Actors to Come Out: 'Hiding Your Sexuality Is Stupid,' Don't Listen to Fearful Agents

While modern Hollywood has shown increasing tolerance and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, and is more willing to feature non-comedic gay characters in film and television, many actors still fear mainstream audience rejection and choose to conceal their true sexual orientation. Addressing this, veteran actor Sir Ian McKellen, who came out publicly years ago, is now urging his colleagues to bravely embrace their authentic selves.

In a recent interview with "The Times," McKellen appealed to closeted actors, stating, "I've not met a single actor that's come out that's regretted it. I feel sorry for any celebrity who feels they can't come out. Hiding your sexuality is stupid, it's unnecessary. Don't take advice from your career advisors, take it from your heart. Take it from gay friends who know the situation better. Come out, come into the sunshine."

McKellen further observed that historically, no Oscar-winning actor, British Prime Minister, or Premier League footballer has openly identified as gay. He noted, "In women's sport, it's not a big deal. But I can imagine young footballers might get very bad advice from agents worried about their income going down, just like actors." However, he predicted, "The first Premier League footballer to come out will be the most famous footballer in the world. All the companies will be begging to have his name on their products."

The fear of coming out is a genuine concern for many in the entertainment industry. Kate Winslet, in a 2021 interview with "The Times," also highlighted this issue. She stated, "I can't tell you how many young actors I know — some well known, some starting out — who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their opportunities to play straight roles. That's just appalling... I can think of at least four actors right now who are completely hiding their sexuality. It's painful for them because they are afraid of being found out. And that's what they say: 'I don't want to be found out.'"

Winslet also criticized Hollywood for often deliberately overlooking gay actors when casting heterosexual roles, suggesting that such practices should be legally prohibited.
