Almost seven years have passed since the last installment of "Mamma Mia!", and discussions about a third film have been constant. The cast members from the first two movies have consistently expressed high enthusiasm for returning. With the musical series set to return to Broadway in mid-August, Judy Craymer (pictured below), who serves as producer for both the stage and film versions, recently spoke with Deadline about the future of the beloved IP.

First, Sabrina Carpenter has been widely rumored to join the third film, with even film star Amanda Seyfried publicly suggesting Carpenter could play her daughter. When asked about Carpenter's potential role, Craymer stated that her character would be "a goddess, or someone who is related to Meryl Streep and looks like her." As for Meryl Streep's character, Donna, who was previously written off, potentially returning in some form, Craymer confirmed it with a definitive nod, adding that Streep had said the wrap parties for the crew were "unbelievable" (laughs).

Craymer also proactively mentioned that "Mamma Mia!" might follow the trend of many current franchises by launching a spinoff series. She described it as "a comedy-drama specifically designed for television," clarifying, "I'm not making it now, I'm just saying it could happen." She continued, "Twenty years ago, you wouldn't really consider these things. Back then, people somewhat looked down on sequels and TV series. But now the world has changed; people are looking for IP ownership and familiarity."
