Ever get into a show because of one character, only to watch them get killed off or have their entire personality torpedoed by a shocking plot twist? It's a special kind of pain.
One overseas fan recently dove into the 1991 OVA classic, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, and shared his journey on X (formerly Twitter). He was instantly smitten with the series' heroine, Nina Purpleton, but as the story unfolded, her character arc left him so stunned that his live-tweeted breakdown caught the attention of fans everywhere.

In Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Nina Purpleton is the female lead who grows close to the protagonist, Kou Uraki. However, her past relationship with antagonist Anavel Gato comes to light, creating a tense love triangle as Kou's rivalry with Gato intensifies. This dramatic turn has earned her a spot on the list of Gundam's most controversial female characters among longtime fans.

The fan, watching the series for the first time, started sharing his fresh take on X.

It didn't take long for him to be captivated by Nina Purpleton's early-story portrayal, declaring her "really cute" and saying she was making the show incredibly fun for him.

As Nina's relationship with protagonist Kou Uraki blossomed, the fan praised their adorable interactions. It was clear he was totally hooked.

But then came the infamous plot twist. When the love triangle came to a head, Nina pulled a gun on Kou and left with Gato, prompting a full-blown meltdown from the viewer.
Naturally, this was followed by the classic reaction image of Kou's own breakdown.

His emotional rollercoaster didn't go unnoticed by Japanese fans, who pointed out that another newcomer had fallen into the trap set by one of Gundam's most beautiful and notorious femme fatales. The pain is real.

After finishing the series, the fan shared his final thoughts:
"It's another one of those tragic stories where the protagonist fights with all their might, only to end up with nothing. I was left with a profound sense of loss after finishing it. The plot revolves around loss, tragedy, betrayal, and heartbreak. Kou Uraki has his moments, but he fails to prove himself when it counts."
"Gundam 0083 starts off feeling awesome, with a high-energy vibe and great battles, but it takes a much heavier turn in the latter half. The music is fantastic, the animation is exquisite, and the mecha combat choreography is brilliant. The showdowns between Gato and Kou are absolutely thrilling! As for the characters, some are genuinely likable, while others show their true colors only at the end. But that also makes them feel more 'human,' representing a kind of growth or a hard lesson learned."
"This series powerfully illustrates how cruel reality can be—even when someone is full of hope and passion, they can end up watching everything crumble away. There are some things in life we can overcome, but some burdens are just too heavy to bear... I don't know if that sounds too abstract, but that feeling really hit me hard."
His detailed review earned praise from many Japanese fans, who appreciated seeing someone offer such a sharp and thoughtful critique of a decades-old series.

Many of us can probably relate to the agony of watching a favorite character's arc take a nosedive into frustrating or unlikable territory. While this fan's live-tweeted despair might seem a bit dramatic, it's a testament to the emotional gut-punch that Gundam can deliver. Some lessons are just learned the hard way.
