The "Saw" franchise was slated for its eleventh installment this year, but two months ago, reports surfaced of a severe conflict among its producers, bringing the development of "Saw 11" to a complete halt. Even distributor Lionsgate was unable to mediate, leading to speculation that the franchise rights might be sold. Two months later, that speculation has become reality. Today, Deadline exclusively reported that Blumhouse Productions, known for its prolific horror output, has acquired the "Saw" rights from original production company Twisted Pictures.

However, this acquisition does not mean the "Saw" series will be distributed by Universal Pictures, Blumhouse’s frequent collaborator. Lionsgate will remain the distributor, as it holds a 50% stake in the intellectual property. There is currently no news regarding when "Saw 11" will resume production.

In other news, Blumhouse also announced today at a horror film business conference that Octavia Spencer will return to star in a sequel to "Ma." The original film, produced for just $5 million six years ago, went on to gross over $60 million worldwide. In recent years, "Ma" has captivated many Western film enthusiasts and younger audiences, with numerous scenes and lines possessing a unique, almost hypnotic charm that makes them perfect for viral memes. This has earned "Ma" significant popularity across Western online communities. With a sequel now on the way, fans can anticipate even more meme-worthy content.

Earlier, acclaimed entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider also reported on his blog, The InSneider, that Michael Showalter, director of "The Big Sick," is in talks to helm "Ma 2." Sneider further revealed that Blumhouse’s acquisition of the "Saw" franchise cost approximately $100 million, with negotiations having been ongoing since last year due to pricing disagreements.
