The 2016 zombie blockbuster "Train to Busan" was an international sensation upon its release, prompting French studio Gaumont to immediately acquire the English-language remake rights that same year. Two years later, New Line Cinema and Atomic Monster—the production company founded by "Aquaman" director James Wan—joined the project, with Warner Bros. Pictures set to handle global distribution.

Titled "The Last Train to New York," the American adaptation was originally slated for an April 2023 release with Timo Tjahjanto ("Nobody 2") attached to direct from a script by Gary Dauberman (the "It" franchise). However, the project has been in limbo ever since Warner Bros. pulled it from the release calendar in 2022.

With no new developments for so long, some fans may have assumed "The Last Train to New York" had been canceled. However, while promoting his latest produced sequel, "M3GAN 2.0," James Wan clarified to Entertainment Weekly that the film is still a passion project for his company, stressing that it's not a remake but actually a sequel: "From a creative perspective, this film and 'Train to Busan' take place in the same world; the zombie virus has spread across the globe. If 'Train to Busan' tells the Korean side of the story, then we hope 'The Last Train to New York' will be the American side. Everything about this film is exciting. I hope it can finally get made, but to be honest, I'm not sure what the current situation is right now."
