Rumors have long circulated about two primary villains in a new "Star Wars" film, reportedly starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy ("Deadpool & Wolverine"). Now, the actors for these two antagonists appear to be falling into place.
Mia Goth, star of the "X" trilogy, was confirmed two months ago to play one of the villains. Today, industry outlet Deadline reported that British actor Matt Smith, known for his villainous turns in films like "Morbius" and "Terminator Genisys," will portray the other antagonist.

Smith has a history with both Gosling and the "Star Wars" universe. Eleven years ago, he appeared in Gosling's directorial debut, "Lost River." He was also reportedly considered for a role in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," but his character was ultimately cut due to script changes before filming began.
Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on "This Is Where I Leave You" and "The Adam Project," is penning the script for the project. The story is set several years after the events of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," with production slated to begin this fall. Rumors suggest this will be a smaller-scale "Star Wars" film with a significantly lower budget than typical franchise entries. The plot is reportedly centered on Gosling's rumored Jedi character, who seeks to apprentice his 15-year-old nephew, only for them to be pursued by a male and female villain during their mission.
