The highly anticipated thriller "Weapons," which just landed in North American theaters this weekend, has been generating significant buzz. The excitement is fueled not only by director Zach Cregger's previous hit "Barbarian," which earned him a dedicated fanbase, but also by a series of overwhelmingly positive test screenings. With Warner Bros. and audiences eagerly watching, many are already wondering what Cregger has planned for his next move.
In a recent interview with Variety, Cregger confirmed that a potential spinoff for "Weapons" is something he's considering. He explained that he couldn't help but come up with an idea for another story set within the "Weapons" universe that he's very excited about. While he noted it won't be his next project, or possibly even the one after, he expressed a strong desire to eventually bring it to fruition.

Cregger's next confirmed film is the new "Resident Evil" movie, which has been in development since last year and is scheduled for a September 18, 2026 release. Production is expected to begin this fall in Prague. After completing "Resident Evil," he also has a sci-fi film with a finished script waiting in the wings, though no story details have been publicly released.
Regarding the new "Resident Evil," Cregger remained tight-lipped on specific plot points but confirmed it shares the same universe as the original game series. "I want to tell a story that honors the mythology of the games within the game's world," he stated, clarifying that "it will be an original, new story."
The "Resident Evil" reboot has already cast Austin Abrams, who also appears in "Weapons," in the lead role. Abrams will reportedly play a selfish courier who unexpectedly becomes a hero when he must protect a young girl infected with the T-virus. Shay Hatten, co-writer of "Army of the Dead," also contributed to the screenplay.

Separately, Cregger had revealed three years ago that he wrote a DC movie script he was passionate about, centered on a Batman-related story. Recently, rumors suggested the script was a team-up film for The Joker and Harley Quinn. However, The Hollywood Reporter has now claimed the script is actually titled "Henchmen." The plot reportedly follows a low-level mob goon who accidentally defeats Batman and becomes a legend in the criminal underworld as a result.
The initial confusion about it being a Joker and Harley Quinn movie likely stemmed from the fact that both characters are written into the script, albeit in supporting roles rather than as the main protagonists.
