The Julia Garner and Josh Brolin-led horror-thriller "Weapons" opened to a surprising $70 million worldwide last week, far exceeding expectations. It wouldn't be a shock if Warner Bros. Pictures pursued a sequel. In fact, director Zach Cregger, who also penned the script, recently admitted he has more stories to tell, though they won't materialize anytime soon.
Cregger didn't elaborate on the specific story he had in mind at the time, but The Hollywood Reporter (THR) revealed this morning that the concept is actually a prequel centered on "Weapons'" main antagonist.

The primary marketing hook for "Weapons" revolved around the mysterious disappearance of an entire elementary school class overnight. The true culprit behind their vanishing is revealed to be Gladys, a witch and relative of one of the students, portrayed by Golden Globe, Emmy, and Oscar nominee Amy Madigan (pictured above).
Reportedly, Warner Bros. and Cregger are discussing a Gladys prequel. This prequel's storyline was originally a chapter within the "Weapons" script that was ultimately cut during script development due to runtime considerations. Now, however, there's interest in developing this standalone chapter into a full-length feature film.
However, Cregger is currently gearing up to direct a new "Resident Evil" film next month, and another original sci-fi project titled "The Flood," with a completed script, is also awaiting production. This makes a Gladys prequel unlikely to move forward quickly, unless Cregger opts to hand over directing duties to someone else.
