Andrew Garfield Wants "Unique, Strange" Spider-Man Story; Foreign Media Speculates "Man-Spider" Could Be His MCU Return

Andrew Garfield, a long-time fan of the "Spider-Man" character, openly expressed his willingness to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in April 2025. However, he set a condition: the story must be "very strange, unique, different, and surprising," ideally offering the same creative freedom found in the animated "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" series.

His comments immediately sparked speculation among fans and media about which comic book storyline could meet Garfield's expectations. Foreign outlets are now suggesting that the answer might lie in the classic Marvel Comics "Man-Spider" arc.

First appearing in the 1982 "Marvel Fanfare" series, the "Man-Spider" storyline saw Peter Parker and X-Men member Warren Kenneth Worthington III, also known as Angel, abducted and experimented on by the villain Brainchild.

As a result, Spider-Man degenerated into a grotesque, more arachnid-like monster known as Man-Spider, a bizarre and terrifying transformation. This concept perfectly aligns with Garfield's desire for a "strange and unique" narrative.

Man-Spider later resurfaced in the 2004 "Avengers Disassembled" event, where the Spider-Queen triggered Peter Parker's re-mutation.

While the character also appeared in the "Spider-Man" animated series of the 1990s, this version has never been adapted for live-action cinema. With the MCU now fully embracing the multiverse, foreign media speculates that the introduction of Man-Spider might no longer be a distant possibility.

Notably, the MCU has recently shown an increased acceptance for "peculiar Spider-Man variants." For instance, a six-armed Spider-Man made an appearance in the post-credits scene of "What If...?" Season 3, paving the way for more "wild" versions of the web-slinger.

Within the expansive multiverse framework, Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Man-Spider could not only fulfill his wish to star in a "weird plot" but also bring fresh excitement and surprises to the MCU. Whether Marvel will ultimately adopt this particular storyline, however, remains to be seen.
